The Labor Day weekend is always a huge affair at Crystal Motor Speedway and this weekend was no exception. The entire weekend was sponsored by Andersen Contracting of Vestaburg and it drew in both huge crowds and car counts. The weekend got started with the third and final 2008 appearance of the Engine Pro ASCS Sprints on Dirt presented by Victor Reinz at the famed Crystal clay. For the seventh time this year, Dustin Daggett scored a feature win, this time starting from seventh place. The young veteran racer was on a rail as he quickly moved forward and then assumed complete control of the race. He was followed by Brett Mann, Darren Long, Ryan Grubaugh, and Tim Norman. Heats went to Long, Gregg Dalman, Grubaugh, and Daggett.
The Port City Pro Tucks saw Chris Verhaar get out to a big lead and then have to fend off the new 2008 division champion Tim Wood to claim the win. Tim Hansen was third, followed by Kevin Deal, Jim Snyder, Scott Nieman, and Chad Raby and Tim Sooy. Deal took the heat.
The Engine Pro IMCA Modified feature was dominated early by Don Rohn with Todd Cowen heavy on his bumper. Cowen developed handling problems that led to his exit and shortly there after, Rohn's machine developed mechanical problems that gave the lead to Bruce Lewis who then fell back due to problems, leaving the lead to Mickey Carman Jr.. Carman has been close to a feature win several times and has posted several impressive runs in the short post season races already but had not been able to take the checkers first, until Saturday. Carman held off Brennan Bowen and Jim Hale Jr to post his first ever IMCA Mod feature win. Hale took second, followed by Bowen, Gary VanderMark, Chad Wernette, John DeYoung, Jr., Joe Fowler, Dan Minikey Jr., Milt Montgomery, and Chad Maurer. Cliff Denman and DeYoung took B main wins with heats falling to Rohn, Minikey, Cowen, Lewis, and Neil Seifker.
James Prochazka and his brother Kyle have split driving chores every week and have always been in contention for the win but circumstances always arose but Saturday changed that. James took full advantage of his front row start to chalk up the win for the brothers racing team. Prochazka had his hands full with Will Stanley and then Brian Craigmyle but held his ground and scooped up the win. Craigmyle took home a second, followed by CJ Reisbig, Gary Buskirk, Aaron Wolf, Larry Kosloski, Chuck Gilland, Kevin Rohn, James Sagryn, and Doug McKeown, Sr.. Reisbig, Sagryn, and Buskirk all won heats.
The Big V Photos sponsored Flinn Stocks boiled down to a battle of wills between Kyle Shattuck and Brooke Ann Brasington. Teven Jensen-Kress was in the early battle for the lead but Brasington and Shattuck soon made it their own race. Shattuck held the lead but Brasington was hot on his bumper and often but mere inches off his door panel as the young drivers made hard lap after hard lap. In the end, Shattuck was able to edge out the win but the crowd was clearly appreciative of the fantastic battle between the two. Jensen-Kress brought home a third, followed by. Ashlee Scott, Anthony Fellows, Kevin Kruk, Kalie Carlton, Brady Hollenbeck, Lee Zahm, and Gerald Marsh. Kruk and Hollenbeck took heat gold.
The NAPA Auto Parts Pro Stocks proved to be another of a season long battles of the division titans. Jeff Reist, Mike Husted, Chaney Newland, and several others have staged fight after fight, all clean and always competitive. Saturdays race was a continuation as Newland grabbed the early lead and had to battle back half the lineup to walk out with the feature win. Reist and Husted never let up but Newland was unstoppable. Husted came in second, followed by Reist, Barry Rinard, Dick Reynolds, Derrick Dennis, Dan Willmore, Terry LaClear, Todd Bush, and Rick Trewartha. Newland, Reist and Reynolds scored heat wins.
Action resumed on Sunday and once the features got going, it was Bryan Craigmyle grabbing the early lead in the Smokers Club Street Stock division with Don Rohn and CJ Reisbig fighting behind him. Things got dicey as Will Stanley and AJ Ward lost positions as they got turned in some hard racing. In the end, last years Street Stock champ turned IMCA Mod driver, Mike VanderMark, Jr. came all the way forward to edge out fellow Mod driver Nate Jones for the win. Josh Loomis was next followed by Chuck Gilland, Stanley, Aaron Wolf, Derek Schestag, Larry Kosloski, Vince Denman, and Kyle Prochazka. B feature wins were recorded by VanderMark and Doug McKeown Sr. while Wolf, Jones, Stanley, and Craigmyle put heat wins in the books.
Frank Seder put on a real clinic as he won the third leg of the Soaring Eagle Casino Outlaw Late Models. Matt Pickard and David Hilliker were left to battle for second with Pickard winning that battle. Hilliker was followed by Wade Witherspoon, Jason Parkhurst, Adam Thrush, Zack Olger, Adam Erickson, and Rich Robinson, Sr.. Robinson won the heat.
One of the most exciting finishes in a night of great finishes occurred in the Kentucky Fried Chicken sponsored Late Models when Jay Van Dyke beat out Andy Sprague by a foot or so at the line after a great race. Tom Dusen was third followed by Zack Olger, Richard Neiser, Carl Ries, Brian Nickerson, Kyle Borgman, Mark Andersen, Joe Pomeroy. The B main win went to Andersen while heat gold was taken by Sprague, Tim Stott, and Neiser.
Gavin Parks scored the feature win in the Flinn Stock division in a spirited battle with Kyle Shattuck. An abbreviated field had only four cars with Brady Hollenbeck and Jeff Hitsman making up the rest of the finish. Parks also scored the heat.
Chaney Newland took advantage of a last lap restart to take away a sure win by Jeff Reist in the NAPA Auto Parts Pro Stock division. Reist had dominated the feature but a caution brought Newland right to his bumper and he was able to win a one lap duel over the 2008 champ with a good restart. Vern Buskirk was third followed by Mike Husted, Derrick Dennis, Todd Bush, Terry LaClear, Dan Willmore, Pete Hundey, and Rick Trewartha. Newland and Reist both collected heat wins.
In the Port City Racing Pro Trucks, Chris Verhaar and Tim Wood held a familiar dance as the two veterans over took an early lead by Kevin Deal to respectfully slice and dice with each other in the weekend closer. Verhaar was able to take the win to make it a two for one weekend in the win column. Wood was followed by Deal, Mike Kresnak, Scott Nieman, Jim Snyder, Troy Salsbury, Aaron Raby, and Tim Sooy. Raby grabbed the heat win.
The final event for Crystal Motor Speedway is the Great Lakes Nationals on September 13th. The event is sponsored by Engine Pro, Victor Reinz, Melling, Sportsman Racing Products, JE Pistons, and ARP Racing Products. Gates open at noon and racing starts at 5PM. Adult admission to the grandstands is $15 with kids 5-11 $6. Pit passes bought prior to race day or on the pre-race day registration day on Friday between 6 and 9 PM are $25 and pit passes bought race day are $35.
